Overview
Troubleshooting common issues in the theme editor helps you keep your store running smoothly and ensures you are making full use of all our modern features. The following sections provide solutions to frequent problems and step-by-step guidance to resolve them quickly.
💡 Tip: If you experience any challenges while customizing your theme, review these steps first — they often save you time and help avoid frustration.
Page is redirecting to an unsupported URL
If your storefront redirects to URLs not connected to your shop, this is often due to custom code or an app. This can cause interruptions when editing with the theme editor.
Review your theme files or installed apps for any redirect code that may cause unwelcome behavior.
Make sure redirects are disabled while editing by using the
window.Shopify.designModevariable.This variable is set to
truewhen the store is open in the editor, andfalseotherwise.Referencing this variable lets you stop redirects so your editing is not interrupted.
⚠️ Important: Always disable any redirects that interfere with your experience in the editor while working on your theme.
Page failed to load due to an error
If a page fails to load in the theme editor, this usually means there is a problem with your connection or code.
Check for a reliable internet connection — a weak signal can interrupt your editing session.
Look for invalid Liquid code — errors in custom code can stop the page from loading.
If you've checked these and the page still fails to load:
Preview your store through Theme actions > Preview theme.
If you still can’t load the page, consider reaching out to support for further help.
